Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Jeremy Miles MS, visits nVCC site

Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Jeremy Miles MS, visited the site of the new Velindre Cancer Centre (nVCC) to see the progress of the state-of-the-art project.

The nVCC is a major Welsh infrastructure and healthcare development and is one of the most significant investments in decades.

The Cabinet Secretary met with leaders from Velindre University NHS Trust, NHS staff and partners from the Acorn Consortium and Sacyr UK, who are building the nVCC.

During an in-depth tour of the construction site, the Cabinet Secretary was briefed on the project's progress and discussed the clinical, environmental, and community benefits the new cancer centre will provide to staff and patients.

Speaking of the new Velindre Cancer Centre, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Jeremy Miles MS, said: “The development of the new Velindre Cancer Centre marks a transformative step forward in cancer care for Wales. It will provide world-class care and support to patients and their families across south east Wales, with cutting-edge facilities designed to meet the growing needs of modern cancer treatment. As we move into the next phase of construction, the progress will become even more visible, and we are on track to deliver a facility that Wales can be proud of”.

Scheduled to open its doors to patients in Spring 2027, the nVCC aims to ensure that people affected by cancer in South Wales continue to receive high-quality care for generations to come that Velindre is known for.

The nVCC will improve all aspects of the patient experience, featuring a more user-friendly layout that reduces wait times and alleviates anxiety, along with enhanced connectivity between treatment areas to support more efficient and seamless care.

The nVCC is committed to being one of the most sustainable hospitals in the UK, operating entirely on electricity and prioritising the use of locally sourced, low-carbon materials whenever feasible.

Stakeholder Engagement and Community benefits manager at Sacyr UK, Katie Hathaway said: “It was great to show the Cabinet Secretary around the site and give him an update on the progress of the build. We are all very proud to be working on such a pivotal project for Wales and it was great to show the Cabinet Secretary our work so far”.
