Sacyr Green has created a new material, made from a mixture of natural rubber and waste from used tires (a mix with the same quality of regular rubber) to make materials for roads and road safety equipment.
Natural rubber is outsourced and is applied in different solutions. Our product has a higher natural rubber content, which is used as an additive.
“With the support of the Sacyr Circular technical office, we have made new rubber presses in our Chiloeches plant (Guadalajara, Spain), to make different types of road safety equipment: urban speed bumps, parking slot bumps for car and truck lots, expansion joints for bridges, among others”, explains Antonio Fernández, installation technician for Sacyr Green.
“We have already successfully installed roadway expansion joints in the A-3 highway in Valencia, with our colleagues from Sacyr Maintenance. We have installed two models, the SCR-80 and SCR-100. We are certain that this installation will be repeated in the future, due to the interest shown in other projects”, says Antonio Fernandez.
“With the molds completed, parking lot bumps come next. We are going to open this market and our intention is that all of the Sacyr Group can use these pieces, as we can solve any supply problem or improve the pieces according to the needs that arise in the Group”, says Antonio.
Undoubtedly, this is a milestone for Sacyr, as this is the first time that our group produces construction elements for civil construction. Never before had we produced this kind of material.
“In the main, we will only sell our products to Sacyr, as we have set meeting group needs as our primary goal, but it is true that for speed bumps specifically, we might open sales to third parties because there is a higher demand”, says the project supervisor at Sacyr Green.
“We are the only manufacturer in Spain and in the world that can pick up the deteriorated piece and reuse it while at the same time sell the rubber piece. This way, we achieve the much sought zero-waste. Circular economy through and through”, the expert explains.
The implementation of these pieces by Sacyr Green will provide an added value to both Sacyr Engineering and Infrastructures and Sacyr Maintenance to reduce the carbon footprint of their business. Rubber, the original material, causes a greater carbon footprint, because it is a newly generated material, but ours considerably reduces this impact, because it recycles already existing rubber.
