Sacyr and Acciona join forces to enhance water footprint compensation

  • This initiative pushes for an active water resource management so that companies produce more water than they consume and achieve a Water Positive footprint.
  • The Water Positive concept works on generating new resources and a water credits system, similar to the one already used for CO2 emissions.

Sacyr and ACCIONA have signed a strategic alliance to promote the Water Positive initiative, aiming to take water protection a step further, actively contribute to its sustainable management and restore water resources.

The Water Positive initiative proposes using non-conventional water sources, such as desalination and water recycling, which are essential to reduce the water footprint. Companies are considered Water Positive when they produce more "new water" than they consume, directly and indirectly, hence, they have a positive water footprint.

Under this agreement, both partners will cooperate to promote water footprint compensation, similar to the mechanism that already exists for CO2 emissions.

Sacyr and ACCIONA combine their capacity throughout the value chain to provide a comprehensive service to other organizations and promote Industrial Water Footprint Compensation internationally.

Industry commitments

International corporations are acquiring greater commitments to reducing their water footprints by 2030. 20% of the industrial water footprint could benefit from virtual water exchanges or water credits.

For the entire industry to be Water Positive, the volume of desalinated and reused water would need to increase by 18 times. If only the 50 largest companies are considered, it would be necessary to increase it by 5.5 times.
