The Valoriza-ACCIONA joint venture has won the street cleaning and waste collection service contract in Toledo. This contract has seven-year duration and is valued at €80 million.
The contract includes notable service improvements in terms of social and environmental commitments. These improvements include the collection of the organic fraction, the upgrade of the fleet vehicles and state-of-the-art machine equipment or the replacement of bins for newer models and making 10% of them accessible models for people with reduced mobility.
In addition, the JV is also to install two recycling drop-off points in the old town to for the four different waste fractions: organic, others, plastics, and paper. Moreover, electric cleaning carts will also be included to improve the street cleaning professionals’ health at work.
A new feature for this service is the change of the waste collection model in the local industrial park, which will include 240-liter bins for the companies based in the area.
All these measures will be complementary to awareness campaigns aimed at citizens.
Sustainable criteria
This new contract incorporates notable improvements regarding sustainability criteria on service, facility, fleet vehicle and machinery management.
These improvements include upgrading the fleet vehicles by incorporating zero-emission electric cars and ECO-labelled Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cars, and electric energy from renewable sources. Moreover, this will encourage recycling and preparing waste for reusing and will establish according measures to increase selective waste collection.
The awarding entity considers, among other measures, incorporating state-of-the-art machine equipment, upgrading all bins, and adapting 10% of them for people with reduced mobility, and incorporating electric cleaning carts for the street cleaning workers, as well as recurring awareness campaigns for the general population.
The JV will put work-life balance measures in place for current and new staff members, and new hiring processes will be managed via specific employment centers, mindful of people at risk of social exclusion or gender-based violence victims.
