We built the new Ontario Science Museum (Canada), a cutting-edge project in urban integration

The new museum will be a world-class facility that will also revitalize Ontario Place through the restoration of the city's iconic heritage landmarks.

The Ontario Science Partners (OSP) consortium —comprising the John Laing Group, Sacyr, and Amicowill build the new Ontario Science Museum, a project commissioned by Infrastructure Ontario (IO) under a DBFM (design, build, finance, and maintain) concession model.

The contract includes the design, construction, financing, and maintenance of the new museum, which will transform Ontario Place. It also includes the restoration of two of Ontario Place’s iconic heritage landmarks: the iconic Cinesphere and the Pods, structures elevated above Lake Ontario.

The architectural design is being led by the renowned Canadian firm Hariri Pontarini, in collaboration with the prestigious international firm Snohetta. The project will incorporate sustainability criteria such as LEED Silver certification, energy efficiency optimization, and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Sacyr's Participation

A joint venture formed by Sacyr and Amico will carry out the construction of the project. Work is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026, creating local jobs and generating significant construction activity.

This project marks Sacyr’s first concession in Canada, a milestone aligned with the 2024–2027 Strategic Plan, which prioritizes the growth of the concession portfolio in English-speaking countries.

The contract is valued at 1.04 billion Canadian dollars (approx. 645 million euros).

Revitalization of Ontario Place

The new Ontario Science Museum is a key element in the transformation of Ontario Place, an iconic cultural space on the shores of Lake Ontario that will be renovated to become a modern hub for science and recreation. The project includes: the construction of the new museum, covering approximately 28,300 m²; the renovation of the Pods and the Cinesphere, totaling 6,600 m²; new pedestrian walkways that will connect the various elements of the complex; and the preservation and integration of historic heritage assets.

The Cinesphere will retain its function as a screening room, while the Pods will be modernized to be integrated into the new museum tour. Sacyr and Amico have previously collaborated on the Grandview Kids healthcare project in Ajax. The contract also includes 30 years of facility maintenance, which will be carried out by Johnson Controls.

The new museum will be a world-class facility designed to spark scientific curiosity among visitors of all ages. Its educational programming, with a strong STEM focus, will make it one of Canada’s leading centers for science outreach.
