Transforming the Biobío region with a 21st-Century Bridge

Our Engineering and Infrastructure team is building the new Railway Bridge over the Biobío River for EFE. This project is noteworthy for its scale, innovative construction processes, and commitment to environmental stewardship.

The new Railway Bridge over the Biobío River will connect the communities of Concepción and San Pedro de la Paz, improving regional connectivity with greater safety and ease.

At 1.8 km long, it will serve as a vital artery, enhancing connections between both sides of the Biobío River and facilitating transport via two electrified tracks designed for mixed freight and passenger use.

It's a robust structure, built on 334 piles and 62 beams, replacing the old bridge dating back to 1889.

Innovative Beam Placement

For the bridge's construction, the Sacyr Ingeniería e Infraestructuras team employed an innovative technique developed by our colleague Rafael Pablo Guillén Carmona, head of the Civil Works Structures Department.

The beam launcher is a metal structure composed of three frames and a 92-meter-long lattice, designed for placing metal boxes and pre-slabs. It has a lifting capacity of 140 tons above the riverbed.

Environmentally Conscious Lighting

The LED lighting along the new bridge offers an innovative and energy-efficient design. The design respects the natural environment by minimizing light pollution to protect local fauna and prevent light pollution.

Its distinctive play of lights will contribute to the visual identity of both the infrastructure and the region.
