Successful implementation of the Sustainable Suppliers program
Sacyr has participated in the II (2024) and III (2025) editions of the Sustainable Suppliers program to collaborate in its transition towards more sustainable business models.
28/10/2025
The Sustainable Supplier Training Program of the UN Global Compact Spain, ICEX and Fundación ICO has facilitated the training of more than 2,300 SME suppliers from more than 72 countries.
This program provides them with knowledge and resources on corporate sustainability, as well as help in complying with the requirements of the national, European and international regulatory frameworks on the subject.
In the latest edition, this year, 40% of our suppliers have completed the training, joining the other 48 large companies that have promoted sustainability training in their respective supply chains.
This initiative was launched in 2023 with the aim of training SME suppliers of large companies in the key principles of the UN Global Compact and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since its inception, the program has managed to train more than 5,000 supplier companies in the integration of sustainable practices into their business models.
This edition has stood out for the high level of satisfaction among the participating SMEs, as 91% of them consider that the training has been useful for their company, which underlines the confidence and effectiveness of the initiative.
For Sacyr, the impact of responsible management in its supply chain is very relevant, as it is the main barrier that large companies encounter when promoting sustainability.
2nd Edition of Business & Human Rights
The Sacyr Foundation also participated in the 2nd Edition of the Business & Human Rights Accelerator, along with 56 other companies in Spain.
This innovative six-month program is designed to train companies from all sectors and regions in the implementation of effective human rights due diligence processes.
Through practical tools and expertise, companies can ensure that their operations respect and promote human rights, contributing to the development of a more ethical and sustainable business environment.
The Business and Human Rights Accelerator program is part of the pioneering international outreach programs that the UN Global Compact offers companies to achieve real and effective action on key aspects of the 2030 Agenda and the Ten Principles of the Global Compact.
Meet the professionals responsible for the undergrounding and modernization of the railway station in Almería, Spain. A coordinated and committed team working on a project that will completely transform the city.
04/07/2025
In a new edition of #SacyrTeams, we get to know the members of a united, coordinated, and dedicated team. All of these are essential qualities for the project they are developing: the undergrounding and modernization of the Almería railway station. The scale of the project requires the involvement of a large number of professionals. In the following video, you’ll meet a representation of this great team: Tamaris Garcete, Hugo Ramos, Juan Manuel Molina, Francisco Julián Rodríguez, Juan Francisco González, Puri Salazar, and Jose Pablo Martínez.
A City Divided in Two
The goal of the project is to modernize the facility and turn it into an intermodal station adapted to integrate high-speed rail. This ambitious challenge involves the construction of three new infrastructures: a building for rail traffic, another exclusively for bus traffic, and an underground parking garage with capacity for 400 vehicles. To integrate the project into the urban fabric, the railway tracks will be buried for 1.9 km as they approach the station. This marks a significant improvement in mobility and connectivity for the people of Almería, directly impacting more than 200,000 residents.

The SA8000 standard, endorsed by the United Nations Global Compact, International Labor Organization standards, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and national legislation, establishes the conditions necessary to ensure a safe and healthy working environment, freedom of association and collective bargaining, and socially responsible business management.
To renew the certification, we have updated the training on the standard, available through Explora, in order to further strengthen our ethical culture and prepare for future challenges.
The renewal process has been demanding, but thanks to the effort and collaboration of professionals from different areas of the company, we have successfully passed all external audits. We would like to highlight the work of the Social Performance Team (EDS), the group in charge of complying with this standard, made up of representatives of the company and its employees.
What's new
Among the new developments, the SA8000 standard is in the process of being updated and Sacyr is already preparing to assume its new requirements, which will come into force in 2026. This work will allow us to reinforce our management systems and advance in continuous improvement.
With this renewed certification, we strengthen our position in the international market, improve the management of our value chain and demonstrate our responsibility in participating in global contracts. Another challenge met by working as a team.

Weighing on the Move: Advancing Smart Mobility in Brazil
At our Rota de Santa Maria concession, we monitor the weight of freight vehicles through an overhead sensor system, without requiring them to brake. This streamlines highway operations, enhances road safety, and reduces fuel consumption and emissions.
03/12/2025
Rota de Santa Maria (Sacyr Concesiones) is implementing an innovative high-speed load-control system for trucks on the RSC-287 highway in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil).
“This is a decisive step toward a smarter, safer, and future-ready roadway,” says the Concessionaire’s CEO, Leandro Conterato.
The new system, known as HS-WIM (High-Speed Weigh-In-Motion), relies on quartz (piezo-quartz) sensor technology—one of the most advanced solutions available today.
Its purpose is to monitor vehicle weight limits automatically. The process does not affect travel speed: weight sensors embedded in the pavement work together with cameras and laser detectors installed on overhead gantries to classify and identify each vehicle.
As vehicles pass under the overhead gates, they are scanned and weighed automatically, providing an instant data readout.
“This technology makes it possible to inspect 100% of freight vehicles, 24 hours a day, with greater efficiency and without disrupting traffic. Beyond helping reduce harmful emissions, it delivers significant gains in sustainability, safety, and logistics competitiveness” the CEO highlights.
HS-WIM represents a major leap compared to traditional weighing stations, which require trucks to slow down or come to a complete stop.
Along with more effective load monitoring, the system brings clear environmental and operational benefits: shorter travel times, fewer accidents, and lower fuel consumption—all of which contribute to reducing atmospheric emissions.
Rota de Santa Maria is developing a calculation tool to estimate the volume of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions avoided through the implementation of the HS-WIM system.
Construction works for this system are well advanced, and testing is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
About Rota de Santa Maria
Sacyr Concesiones, through the Rota de Santa Maria concessionaire, has been responsible since 2021 for operating 204 km of the RSC-287 highway. Major widening and improvement works are underway, including the duplication of 200 km of road.
This corridor connects the key cities of the central region of Rio Grande do Sul with the state capital, Porto Alegre.

How We Revitalized the Monumental Building in Lisbon
The Sacyr Somague team carried out the renovation of Lisbon’s Teatro Monumental building, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Among the project’s key achievements was the exceptionally high rate of material recycling and reuse—up to 99% of the existing structure.

Monumental Building Project Team
Project Manager: Nuno Pereira
Sacyr Somague was responsible for the comprehensive renovation and rehabilitation of the Monumental Building for Merlin Properties. Located on Praça Duque de Saldanha, one of Lisbon’s main avenues, the building was originally constructed in the 1990s. It occupies a special place in the city’s collective memory, having replaced the legendary Teatro Monumental, a striking urban landmark demolished in the 1980s.
The building comprises 14 above-ground floors and 6 underground levels, designed for a mixed use of offices and retail spaces. The project followed Merlin Properties’ core principles: architectural quality, environmental responsibility, and strict sustainability standards aimed at obtaining LEED and WELL certifications.
Demolition & Waste Management
The project began with an extensive non-structural demolition phase, including façades, roofing, mechanical and electrical systems, and interior partitions. In addition, one of the main access staircases was demolished to improve the building’s access and evacuation conditions.
LEED and WELL criteria required that at least 75% of non-hazardous construction and demolition waste be recycled or reused. To achieve this, a floor-by-floor strategy was implemented, focusing on team awareness, on-site cleanliness, and the provision of clearly identified waste containers.
Access for heavy vehicles was extremely limited—only one truck could load at a time, and the exterior storage area could hold no more than two containers. Given the daily waste volumes, logistics management became one of the most critical aspects of the demolition phase.
To overcome these constraints, a tailored Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) removal plan was developed. Waste was extracted directly from each floor to a truck via plastic chutes and conduits, which required creating openings in the floor slabs and providing localized shoring for structural support.
Thanks to this meticulous approach, the project achieved a 99% recycling and reuse rate—a remarkable success that surpassed the initial sustainability targets.
Structural Reinforcements & Seismic Upgrading
Given the change in the building’s intended use, the project included significant interventions in its structural framework—such as creating new staircase openings, reinforcing open-plan areas, and upgrading the structure to meet modern seismic regulations.
These modifications required reinforcing multiple existing horizontal and vertical structural elements, extending from the affected floors down to the foundations. Reinforcement of the vertical components represented a major undertaking, with considerable cost implications and a defining impact on the project’s critical path.
Facade Transformation & Integration with the Existing Structure
A central aspect of the rehabilitation was the complete replacement of the existing facade with an active curtain wall system. Designed by the renowned architectural firm Broadway in collaboration with a specialist facade contractor, the new solution features double-skin aluminum and glass modules incorporating forced ventilation, air return systems, and internal operable windows.
These modules are anchored to the primary structure through an aluminum fixing system, designed to transmit project loads and accommodate building movement.
Project Completion
The Monumental Building renovation was successfully completed in 2021, delivering high client satisfaction thanks to Sacyr’s added value, on-time delivery, cost efficiency, and commitment to the rigorous quality standards required by Merlin Properties. This success was made possible by the dedication and expertise of the Sacyr Somague team.
