To continue celebrating our 40th anniversary, today we’re hopping on the Edinburgh tram, which connects the city to the airport and takes thousands of travelers to their destinations.
A journey through the history and future of the Scottish capital that we’re revisiting alongside some of its key figures.
The project faced demanding challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the excavation, conservation, and relocation of important archaeological finds. Among them were the original wheels from the first trams that ran through the city in the 19th century.
The project also included the reconstruction of a medieval wall, yet another example of how the development of modern infrastructure preserves and protects historical heritage.
The expansion of the Edinburgh tram system, developed by Sacyr, involved the construction of a new 4.7-kilometer section between York Place and Newhaven, with eight new stops. This extension improves the connection between the airport and the northern part of the city and serves nearly 16 million passengers a year.
