Sacyr completes construction of a section of the A-32

The construction of this section of the A-32 is an example of sustainability because it uses asphalts made with the additive RARX, formulated with rubber powder.

Sacyr Engineering and Infrastructures has completed the construction of the 17.2 km section of the A-32 between Villacarrillo and Villanueva del Arzobispo (Jaén), in which it has used the additive RARx, formulated with recycled rubber powder, which is equivalent to the recycling of 100,000 out-of-use wheels.

The Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, presided over the commissioning of the section, accompanied by other authorities and by Pedro Sigüenza, CEO of Sacyr Engineering and Infrastructures.

The minister stressed that this development allows to reduce travel times, improves safety and makes it possible to separate two types of traffic; because the N-322 will allow channeling agricultural vehicles, thus, improving traffic conditions, with a reduction in the associated pollution levels.

The A-32 is a road axis that links the province of Jaén and connects the Autonomous Communities of Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha with the Mediterranean coast. This project had an investment of €134.5 million involved the construction of 16 new structures:

  • One 240-meter precast double T beam viaduct.

  • One 64-meter false tunnel.

  • 8 overpasses with post-tensioned concrete slab boards in situ.

  • 4 caisson underpasses made of reinforced concrete and 2 made of precast beams.

Sustainability

The minister highlighted the use of sustainable materials in this project. Sacyr has used bituminous mixtures with the addition of rubber powder from recycled end-of-life tires on the platform.

The section runs through a typical landscape in Jaén, where the olive grove constitutes the main crop and provides a very characteristic infinite visual. Environmental integration of this project is achieved with the reforestation of the slopes, special measures for the fauna by means of animal escape portholes, and roadside tree planting.

In addition, the project has undertaken an intense archaeological campaign that dug out up to 7 sites. An oven dating back to Roman times was found in one of the sites, and due to its dimensions and good condition, it was moved in one piece to the archaeological site of Castulo, 8 kilometers away from Linares.

Villacarrillo-Villanueva del Arzobispo

The new section is 17.2 km long and ends at 193.67 km marker of the N-322, leaving behind the urban center of Villanueva del Arzobispo. Over the first 10 km approximately, the road runs with a new route, while the last 7 km run in a split of the N-322.

In addition, a 377-meter-long reinforced retaining wall was built, as well as numerous breakwater walls of different lengths and sections, necessary to contain the cuttings adjacent to both the main road and the access and service roads.

Precisely, one of the main characteristics of the project is the geotechnical complexity of the area, which required the development of significant measures for its correction.
