The Port Authority of Bilbao has awarded the contract for the construction of the second phase of the Central Pier of the Port of Bilbao to a Sacyr Engineering and Infrastructure-led JV. This contract has a €55.2 million budget and has an execution period of two years.
This scope of this project includes the development of the East infrastructure of the Central Pier of the Port of Bilbao, comprising a vertical caisson dock that will generate a new port area of 31.2 hectares, as well as 1,011 linear meters of new berthing docks: 664 meters in the new A3 quay and 347 meters as an extension of the current A4 quay.
This intervention will culminate the Expansion of the Port in the Outer Pass, which started in the 1990s.
The different caissons will be manufactured in the port’s hinterland by means of the Sacyr Uno floating dock.
A strategic project
This project is strategic for the Port of Bilbao, as it will allow it to accommodate the demand for port land to fit new projects and maintain its position as a reference port in the Cantabrian Sea.
The main project activities will involve the manufacture of new concrete caissons, followed by their filling with sand from dredged maritime deposits; the construction of a quay apron, the backfill of the quay with land-based riprap, the execution of the seaside and land-side superstructure, the extension of the stormwater drainage network, and the installation of port equipment.
