Our Sacyr Maintenance delegation in Andalusia, particularly in the provinces of Jaén, Granada, and Huelva, made a commitment long ago to carry out circular economy initiatives. Hence, our collaboration with the Libera Cunetas project.
The project, launched by SEO/BirdLife and Ecoembes, which we have joined, contributes to science and expertise by sampling and categorizing litter and waste from different sections of the roadside. The goal is to obtain information about consumer habits, seasonality, possible trends in behavioral patterns, etc.
“Ecoembes has an analysis and sampling program that identifies consumer habits, trends, evolution, and behavior. The idea is to raise awareness among the population: prevention, awareness, and education,” explains Jorge Zarzuelo, head of Sacyr Maintenance’s Innovation, Procurement, and Machinery Park.
“The sum of small, individual actions can add up to tons of garbage polluting the highways and their surroundings,” Zarzuelo asserts.
The waste that is regularly collected from street gutters by Sacyr’s Maintenance staff will be identified and classified to help raise awareness among society. Several volunteer groups operating in other natural environments carry out similar operations.
Southern area delegate, Simón Maestra, coordinates the training of our workers with Ecoembes and the COEX centers to help reduce roadside waste. The project requires the involvement of all Maintenance personnel.

-Plastic. The most used, the most discarded: 8 million tons of plastic reach the world’s oceans every year.
-Cigarette butts. 6 billion cigarettes: 4.5 billion discarded butts.
-Street gutters. Minimal data; waste smaller than 10 cm. (butts, paper, and plastic).
-W.C. The gateway to nature for small debris; or nature used as a W.C.
