Digitalized demolitions to get deeper insight on materials

At Valrec project, we have recently started to use BIM-SD, a tool that offers valuable information on the quality, quantity, location, and shape of the material to destruct.

We are incorporating BIM-SD, a new digital tool, to demolition processes. This tool provides very useful information about the materials to demolish before starting the process.

Valrec project, in which we are involved in through Surge Ambiental, already uses this tool to identify the quantity of the material, its quality, location, and shape, and even its pollution potential.

Valrec project oversees construction and demolition waste management for its later valorization and recovery, with the aim of advancing towards continual tech innovations in the sector.

How it works

With BIM-SD, the first step consists of digitalizing the building to create a 3D model. Having a pre-view of the building enables us to make better demolition plans, considering a higher degree of precision of the generated waste and the project’s environmental impact.

“Being able to make such previsions greatly improves our waste management and material recovery practices to later reuse them”, explained Juan Diego Berjón, Head of service at Surge Ambiental.

“At completion, we will compare the results predicted by the BIM software and the materials resulting from the building’s demolition, and then use these results to improve the software”, said Berjón.

Knowing the materials resulting from the selective demolition of an edification process provides highly relevant information to assess management or revalorization alternatives.

BIM-SD solves the issues caused by the current pre-demolition audits, normally done with spreadsheets to estimate the resulting volumes of construction and demolition waste, but these are imprecise and have a high error margin.

The goal of BIM-SD is to facilitate the process of gathering and managing information about the existing elements and materials in the building to be demolished and implement better decision-making around the optimal demolition sequence and waste management.

Varlec pilot tests are being carried out at the rehabilitation works on a museum in Madrid, a project carried out by Foster + Partners L.T.D., Rubio Arquitectura S.L.P, the joint venture EMPTY-Sacyr, with Surge Ambiental and Perfox in charge of the demolition and construction and demolition waste management.
