Luis Romero tells us about his experience as a safety officer in Chile

Through this program, we recruit people who have suffered an accident in the workplace.

The aim of the ‘Safety Officers’ program is to employ on our sites people who have been involved in an accident in the workplace so they can watch over the safety of their colleagues. These people work directly with risk prevention officers to monitor compliance with safety regulations and prevent possible accidents.

Luis Romero is one of our safety officers and every day he performs this very important task on the site building the Autopista Américo Vespucio Oriente (AVO I) highway in Santiago de Chile.

“Sacyr gave me the opportunity to join the work force in spite of my disability. I couldn’t find work, and thanks to the company, I have been able to move forwards and I can show how capable I am”.

His task, which involves supervising his colleagues on site, has proved very popular with his fellow workers. “I explain to them very politely that I want them to get home safe and sound. I don’t want them to have a serious accident like I did. I want to be an example of responsibility in safety”, he said.
